Taming EdTech

The new School

The digitized school is increasingly resembling a data factory. Taming EdTech contends that although digital technologies provide opportunities for alternative and enhanced learning and teaching, the extraction of data primarily supports broader socio-technical systems and fuels AI development, often driven by private and commercial interests.

Audit to license

An improved digital education ecosystem would mean that systematic corrective mechanisms exist whereby digital technology providers are rigorously assessed, evaluated, and licensed only if they meet minimum appropriate legal, ethical, safety, pedagogic requirements. Education is a fundamental right; selling to schools is a privilege. EdTech and AI product suppliers should ‘earn’ this privilege and earn the trust of the education community that their products prioritise children’s wellbeing and what is desirable for them in their learning journey.
